Prevent User Access to USB Drives

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tools/16306.html - article describing how to give non administrator users the ability to install USB mass storage devices. Basically give write access to the %WINSYS%\\inf\\usbstor.inf

 

Unfortunately it doesn't seem possible to allow non-administrative users the ability to install USB devices. Sometimes it will work, sometimes not. It has to do with signed drivers, devices that aren't WHL compatible, devices that don't have a unique identifier tying them to a driver, etc. There is a list of requirements Windows requires for a device to be installed non-interactively, they call it server side install, using the Plug&Play service. If it doesn't meet these requirements a client-side or non-interactive install is done, and there's no way to allow non-administrative accounts the rights to do this install.
