Change Default Keyword Search Behaviour
By default, when you key in keyword(s) in Firefox address bar, it will search the keyword(s) using Google “I’m Feeling Lucky” option. The “I’m Feeling Lucky” option will load the #1 rank website of the keyword(s) search result, instead of listing matching websites.
Personally, I NEVER use “I’m Feeling Lucky” (not because I am unlucky). I prefer to see a list of matched websites and selecting from them.
To change the Firefox option is very simple, as follows:-
- At Firefox address bar, enter about:config and press ENTER.
- At Filter: field, type keyword.url
- You should see a Preference name of keyword.URL in the list. Double click it, a “Enter String Value” input box will appear.
- Replace the string with: http://www.google.com/search?q=
Create Keyword Bookmarks
In Mozilla Firefox, you can simply right-click in a search field on a web page and choose “Add a Keyword for this Search.” This will pop up a dialog for you to add a bookmark name and keyword.
You can also create it manually:
- Do a search on the site you want to add a quicksearch to.
- Bookmark the page you are brought to (the results page).
- Open the Properties dialog for your new bookmark.
- In your bookmark’s URL (the Location field), find and replace what you searched for with
%s(If it does not appear, you cannot use a quicksearch here) - Add a keyword
Difference between (small s) %s and (Capital S) %S
- (small s):
%swill have additional substitution replacements:#by%23,%by%25,/by%2F, and@by%40. - (Capital S):
%Swill not have substitutions and allow use ofC++in a Google search, allow use of@in an email substitution, allow use of a fragment-id in a url substitutionindex.html#example2, and use of a directory as incode/example2.txt.
